Behind the Build Rancho Alegre in Santa Fe
Some jobsites are memorable just for the scale of what you're working on. Rancho Alegre is one of those.
Rancho Alegre is a 21,000+ square foot adobe estate outside Santa Fe, set on 178 acres and currently listed at $16.5 million. It was shaped over the years by its owner, Jochen Zeitz, the former CEO of Puma and Harley-Davidson, around his love of the American Southwest. The property has since been used as a filming location for Succession and Dark Winds. It's the kind of estate most contractors only ever see in photos.
What We Worked On
My scope on Rancho Alegre covered several distinct pieces of the property:
The pool and cabana. A full remodel of the pool and cabana area, built to match the scale and character of the rest of the estate.
The jail cell remodel. Rancho Alegre includes an Old West-style jail cell on the property, a genuinely unique feature that called for careful, character-appropriate renovation rather than a standard remodel approach.
The Torreón addition. A torreón, a traditional Southwestern tower structure, added to the property. Building a new structure that reads as though it's always belonged on a historic-style estate takes real attention to proportion, material, and detail.
Why a Property Like This Is a Different Kind of Project
Estates at this scale come with their own set of demands. Every material choice has to hold up against the rest of an already fully realized property, one with a chapel, a recording studio, a general store, and a cantina built into the grounds. There's no room for something that feels tacked on. Everything has to earn its place.
That's also exactly the kind of project where working with a smaller, hands-on firm matters. A property this specific and this personal to its owner needs a contractor who's paying attention to every detail, not managing it as one of a dozen jobs running at once.
A Property With a Story
Beyond the scale, Rancho Alegre has a history that makes it stand out even in Santa Fe. Adding new work to a property that's already been featured on screen, in a place with this much character, is a reminder of why I love doing this work in New Mexico. Every property here has its own story, and it's a privilege to add a chapter to one like this.
